There is a Bush family whose address is Broadway, Great Dunmow in the 1891 census:- |

There are lots of people named Bush living Broadway, Great Dunmow in previous census years but I can't see any mention of "Flying Rats". |

Thanks the listed buildings site suggests the name Flying Rats came into use early 1900's, wondered what it was before it became a pub? earliest resident I can find is Herbert Bush 1906. |

There is also a Sarah Bush in the 1841 census aged 50 a publican at The Harp in that area. I wonder if the pub had its name changed later. |

Thanks everyone for your replies, the name is certainly unusual, thats what got my interest. it's so difficult to trace a building in the earlier census returns. I know the building was there long before the first census but finding it is a nightmare. I will look at all your suggestions. Thanks |
