Hi, anybody got any theories on this relationship please? In 1841, John Blades b 1806 (age 35) is living at Inham's End, Whittlesey St Mary & St Andrew, Cambs. Also here is Mary b 1766 (I assume due to age gap that this is his mother?) In 1851 census, John Blades is living at Inhams End, Whittlesey and is Head of the household. Other members are: Mary Blades Wife Married 33 1818 Whittlesey John Blades Son 7 1844 Whittlesey and Mary Blades Daughter 3 1848. But also, Ann Fountain Wife Daughter Female 9 b1841 from Whittlesey.
BMD Oct-Dec 1842 shows wedding between John and Mary Fountain. Ann Fountain was born Apr-Jun 1841 on BMD at Whittlesey.
There is a census 1841 record at Inham's End, Whittlesey St Mary & St with a Mary/Ann living together.
Would you agree that Mary Fountain had Ann (as an unmarried mother) living at home with her father James and mother Mary. And that John Blades married her a year later and that they then started a family together?

when did his mother Mary die?
sometimes waiting for a parent to die was a reason to wait to get married.
But also, having a child before marrying was not badly thought of in those days ............ and was at least as common as today.
Having a child showed that the woman was fecund, and there would almost certainly be more children born after the marriage to help look after the older generation when the time came.
However, I do not think you can assume that the child Ann is the daughter of John Blades. She might however have begun to use his surname as she grew up.

From Cambridgeshire Baptism Index cd, a Baptism entry, Ann Fountain 1841 Whittlesey St. Mary. You would need to see Parish Record for details.
Also, from Cambridgeshire Burial Index cd, a Burial entry, Mary Blades 1842 Whittlesey St. Mary. 77

Eliza Blades was my Great Grandmother. She was born in Whittlesey in 1857 to parents John and Mary, nee Fountain. John Thomas (my Great Uncle) was Eliza’s first child, born on 28th February 1877 in the Workhouse, Whittlesey, (no father named). Eliza moved to Peterborough and lived for a time at the Waggon and Horses pub as a servant, leaving John at home with her mother. (1881 Census for Peterborough and Whittlsey confirm) She married Samuel Whittington, also of Whittlesey but living in Peterborough, on 4th December 1881. She described herself as ‘spinster’. At the time he was working on the Railway as a Labourer. He died 3 months later of gangrene, presumably as a result of an accident. In 1890 (24th March) she had Olive. There was no father named on the BC. In the 1891 census, Eliza, Olive and John were living in Hills Yard, Peterborough. Eliza uses the surname Whittingon, but Samuel couldn’t be Olive’s father, having died some 9 years before. Eliza married again, this time to William Pratt, a widower, on 28th September 1895. They are on the 1901 census living in Roger Street Peterborough (now Clarence Road). Her son John is by now married to Emma and living in Bodgers Yard. I found Olive living with relatives in Leicestershire. Eliza had been a constant source of mystery to me for years. she was born a Blades, her daughter, my Grandmother, was born a Blades - on her MC she names her father as William Blades. Yet so far I've have no proof of a father anywhere!
