DOBINSON Wilhelmina [age] 26 [ship] Taroba [arr date] 24 May 1889
From NLA Trove newspaper
The Brisbane Courier, Wednesday 19 March 1890 CHARGE OF BIGAMY. At the City Police Court yesterday, before Messrs G.P.M. Murray, P.M. and W. Widdop, J.P., a man named Wm. Dobinson (29) was charged willi bigamy. Sub-inspector White prosecuted. The following evidence was taken -Detective Shanahan deposed that on the 11th instant he went to the South Brisbane Gaol, where he saw the defendant and had a conversation with him. Witness said to him, referring to a document, "This is the certificate of your first marriage. Have you anything to say about it?" He looked at it and said, "1883. That's the date. That's correct. " He had read the warrant produced to the defendant. Senior detective Nethercote stated that he first saw Wilhelmina Dobinson (in court) on the 6th instant, from whom he received the certificate which he had given to Detective Shanahan. Hubert Morris, second deposition clerk at the City Police Court, stated that he had charge of the records of the court. He produced the depositions taken on 17th June, 1889, when the defendant was charged with wife desertion. Wilhelmina Dobinson was the plaintiff in that case. The defendant's statement was then produced. Witness also produced depositions taken at the gaol in the matter of an application by the defendant for a variance of an order for maintenance of the said Wilhelmina Dobinson. Philip Pinnock, P.M., produced several letters and a quantity of evidence received by and taken before him. Wm. H. Knell-Abell, nomination clerk in the Immigration Department, produced the application of the defendant for a passage for his wife, Wilhelmina Dobinson, from England to Queensland. Detective Conry said that when he arrested the defendant on the Logan-road on the 11th June last for wife desertion he (defendant) said, " I have sent several letters to her, and also money. She didn't answer. I asked her to come out. I have heard a very bad account of her from home. I am only married to the other one for about seven weeks. I didn't know that she was coming out. " By the defendant: There was another woman present, but witness did not remember saying that she was his second wife. Arthur L. Dickson, clerk in the Registrar-General's Department, produced a statement of particulars of marriage between the defendant and Mary Johanna Maria Jacobson on the 24th April, 1889, which he had filed up at the defendant's direction. Chas. T. Whitley, Deputy Registrar-General, produced the original marriage ceitifioate, in which the defendant and Mary Johanna Maria Jacobson were the parties. Witness had asked the defendant if he had ever been married before, and he replied, ' No " On the 29th of the same month the defendant and the girl Jacobson came to the office, and tho defendant signed a declaration and form of consent. They both signed a form of declaration, authorising the marriage before the Registrar. On that date he married the defendant and the girl Jacobson in the presence of witnesses [form produced]. Mary Johanna Maria Jacobson said that she knew the defendant as Wm. Dobinson. She went through a form of marriage with him on the 29th April last at the Registrar-General's office. Before the marriage he said that he was a widow and that his wife was dead. She remembered seeing Willhelmina Dobinson about the 9th June at her father's house, where she said that she did not want to hurt the defendant, but she wanted to get a divorce so that she could go home and get married again. She told her to tell him to come and meet her, and she would settle things quietly without going into court. Then she had him arrested. By the defendant: He gave witness a letter next day to give to Wilhelmina Dobinson and she gave it to her. Defendant pleaded guilty, and stated that he was sorry for what had happened, but it was not all his fault as he had been forced into the affair. He was committed for sentence to the next sittings of the Supreme Court, to be held on the 24th instant.
He was found guilty of bigamy.

Hi Joan
No divorce found to 1900 in Victoria. But if they married in England, I assume that is where she would have to apply for divorce.
Unless she 'assumed' the name Smith as a cover...I can't see a marriage for her in England or Qld to SMITH, as NOBLE nor DOBINSON.
She had no children?

Hi Cherilyn Looks like she is going to stay a mistery for now, maybe something will come up in the future. I wonder if she had meet someone else in USA as 1 of her sisters lived over there but this was'nt until after she went to Australia & it is stated in the above statement that she wanted a divorce so as to re-marry, oh well back to the drawing board!!
