no I have not tried facebook.I could have a go I suppose.I did look at all the old bibles for sale recently on ebay but no luck.Perhaps the lady just wants to keep them.I would not mind if she wished to do that.Fair enough,she bought them.She may have sold them already.But I really want to see what names and secrets my steed family have written in the bibles at least.I know my Steed ancestors went up to london from cornwall.One worked as a cheesemonger.He died young.His sister Bessie Steed[working in service] went up there too and married her policeman from evesham and they stayed in policemans digs in london along with other policemans families in the 1800s.Bessie married Mr Knight and they had children.I do have contact with their descendants now.William Steed [bessies father] was my great,great grandfather and one of his sons-my great grandfather was albert steed brother of Bessie who married Mr Knight the policeman.There were alot of children.They are my dads family.They started off in cornwall running the sportsmans Inn in Notterbridge for 20 years,then moved to torquay devon.
Im going to falmouth on holiday in three weeks and hope to put more adverts in the local papers to try again to locate the lady.Maybe she will see it or her friends or relatives.I have looked for the original shop online for the animal hospital in falmouth where the bibles were sold but it says its closed.Then there appears an address for the shop in falmouth so I am very confused.Maybe I will be lucky some day.Thanks for writing.Regards.Rosalind.

This is an old subject but these are my relatives and the bibles belong to my family of steeds.I have contacted Alison who saw the bibles and we did try to find the lady who purchased them in the charity shop but to know avail.Its devastating to loose these family bibles and I just wish someone else could help me find this lady who got them.I live in cardiff so it is hard to get to cornwall.I did put an advert in two local cornish newspapers to try to trace her in 2011 but no luck.Perhaps someone else knows the lady who has these bibles.Thanks for any further info however small the info is.Regards.Rosalind Steed.

UPDATE:Bibles sold later on the same day I saw them. I have left my number in the shop and they will give it to her when she comes in as she is a regular visitor and lives in the area.She may get in touch and let me have a bit more info on the actual family and then I will post it. Varies enormously - just google "family bible ebay"!!

Thanks everyone-I am tempted to go back and have another look if they are still there. They may let me write some details down and do a bit more searching on here. They were big bibles about 4-6 inches deep and the covers which had detached from the main Bible were 12-14 inches in length. I could have looked at them for hours and was tempted to buy them but they were very heavy and I had quite a walk ahead of me.
How much would these Bibles normally sell for-does anyone know?
There was a sticker on them with offers please.
I am sure to the right person they would be like gold dust!
If they are still there I will check out those names on Tuesday. Not sure they will be open tomorrow being a Bank Holiday.

If in a charity shop I assume they aren't too expensive? I would be tempted to buy them then you can search for the family at leisure. If all else fails you could just keep them or put them on Ebay!

Of course, we really need some names from the bible to be able to connect to it, otherwise this is pure guesswork.

I do wish I could discover such an item though - even if it wasn't connected to 'my' family I would be unable to resist bringing it home and exploring it's history!

I think I must be truly addicted

I don't know if anyone will see this and it is a bit of a long shot but yesterday I saw two family Bibles in a charity shop near to where I live. Out of curiosity for such old and important (to someone) items I looked through the top one and it had the Family names Knight and Steed in the family pages plus other names and was from the central London areas of Westminster and Piccadilly. (not where I live now)/ There was so much more info but it was a busy and crowded shop and I thought I had better move as they were on a shelf near the till. The lady in the shop said they date from mid 1800's onwards. I really wanted to buy them because they are so interesting but sadly they aren't anything to do with my family tree.
If anyone is interested plz get in touch and I will see if they are still there next week and get the number of the shop etc
