I am glad you agree with me about risotto rice Janey - It has such a good reputation but I too find it to be like 'glue'!!!

It is not just me then ???

Cynthia Report 19 Oct 2010 22:27

It's sitting in the waiting room which tends to wreck me Dea...there are patients with all sorts of neurological conditions and he always says that he hopes he doesn't get as bad as some of them look!

I'm not much good with rice either Janey - but potatoes I can cope with! Really can't see the point of the frozen ones though. Do people actually buy the ready mashed stuff you see in supermarkets.....I've often wondered....?

Frozen veg is as nutritious as fresh apparently but I buy fresh when I can and, like you, use frozen beans, peas etc.
Apparently cauliflower is going 'out of fashion' ! We use quite a lot of it though. I like it with cheese sauce but both OH and daughter can't eat cheese so I am stymied on that.
I do wish I enjoyed cooking more.

FannyByGaslight Report 19 Oct 2010 22:30

Mother used to get dreadful side effects from her Parkinsons meds.
Couldnt sleep well,made her feel yuk inside and she def had a few occasions of confusion.
They changed them after a year of her complaining and now she gets along fine.
If she is late taking a pill though she says she gets a bad feeling in her tummy like bad butterflies that make her shakes a bit worse.
but she has had it for 8 yrs now and still doing all the cooking, washing ,some light housework and running the farm with dad and brother.
So its amazing what the meds can do for it now.
I know it wont last forever as do you Cyn,but it makes a HUGE difference.
I saw an uncle with it as a small child and was worried sick that mother would be as bad as that as he went downhill fast as did my greatnan on mothers side so she says,but we are all really happy with the stuff she is on now..

I think they will give him a 'booster' as, when his meds are due, he slows down to almost a standstill.....we call it 'moonwalking' lol. Otherwise he is doing pretty well and I am grateful for that.

Thanks Fans ;)

Off to sleep now (I hope).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~night all.
Make the most of the peace....I may have my naughty head on tomorrow :)
Is Parkinsons heredity
In my family it seems to be Renes.
Skips a generation down the female side.
The uncle that had it was "married in"so we dont count him.
Mother started with her right hand shaking and told the Doc that she had Parky as it was how her nans had started.
He said it most prob not and she would have to wait months for the test,so she went private and 3 wks later went back to doc and said
I told you so ..!
Took a year before they would put her on meds as they said she "wasnt bad enough" !
Bet they dont say that if its THEIR family..
So I may not get it but any of her grandaughters may.
But of course they may not and by then they should have a lot more help for it sorted..seems to start in mid 60s in our family so mother says.
Mother has left her brain to Parkinsons society for research
Father told her she should have left all her body to save us the expense of a funeral..:)
I must admit to total ignorance of the disease - it never features on documentaries - I had assumed until Cynthia mentioned it tonight- that it was degenerative dementia type similar to Alzheimer's disease
It is a genetic disorder - can they test children for the likely outcome
FBG, check your email and that thread. You've fallen behind in keeping track of the annoyances hereabouts. ;)
To all those with the health problems and family members with health problems: I've been reading and wish you all well.
Hey JaneyC~~~~~~
You were asking about AuntySherlock the other day. La Gooner has heard from her and apparently as far as the project is concerned 'we are now at the other end of the tunnel at least. '
I am back. Decided to skip the graveyard as it was torrential rain.
Very boring conference though.
Traffic jams all day long,
A2 was closed this morning so gridlock.
I see a lot of people with Parkinsoms disease and it can be quite distressing. Hope all is well Cynthia.
Hi all
spent the afternoon at G's Celebration of Life ........ very simple, no prayers or anything formal. Just a place for friends, family etc to meet and talk together. The immediate family members spoke about their memories ...... the 3 children, a son-in-law, G's wife, his grandson (12 years old), his brother and sister ...... and that was all the "formality".
'course it was another place for the retired ex-colleagues and spouses to meet ........ we never seem to meet up anywhere else these days.
Every time, someone says we should try and meet up somewhere. I suggested to OH as we came home that maybe we should try to organize a buffet dinner at our place in the new year, and see how many will come.
re onions and potaotes
my Dad used to eat a raw whole onion whenever he thought he was getting a cold
.... preferably a large Spanish one!
How about french fries (chips) made out of mashed potatoes??
I found out about that about 3 years in a restaurant out in the boonies. They had bbq ribs and fries on the menu ..... both usually safe for me to eat. However, I always double check the lactose
......... and the waitress came back to say that she would not allow me to have the fries because they were made of mashed potatoes, formed in to shape and then deep fried.
They bought them frozen and no-one in the kitchen knew whether or not there was lactose in the mashed potatoes.
So they gave me a baked potato ........... which I had to eat "dry" of course!
oh yes
I also freeze my own rice, in portion sized amounts wrapped in saran and put into freezer bags.
J had a Japanese roommate when she was in the townhouse residences at uni ..... that's what she did. She said most people now did it in Japan
Just take the rice out of the fridge, put it in a microwave proof container, zap it for about 1 minute, or until it's very hot
and dinners all but ready!
I always make more rice than I need, then freeze the excess
