Yorkshire Pudding

Stick your oven on full and shove in a well oiled huge tray

Chuck some plain flour into a mixing bowl

Add a pinch of salt and 4 eggs...beat the hell out of it and slowly add milk and water (50/50)

When you get to a nice double cream consistency add a finely chopped onion and a teaspoon of sage

Let it stand at room temp for about 40 minutes

Whack it in the boiling hot tray and stick back in the oven for 20 minutes.....DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR until cooked

Serve with lashings of onion gravy

Yummy

When I used to cook, I found they did'nt rise unless I used a balloon whisk.
So would a food blender be the same as a electric hand mixer?

Gins
So by the time you chuck it in the oven, your kitchen stinks and is full of smoke as the oiled tin has been in the oven for 40 mins?

Gee

Gee Report 18 Oct 2010 19:19

No Yorkshire person measures and weighs for a Yorkie

It's all about the consistency of the batter and getting plenty of air into it....a bit more of this or that until you get the right thickness!

Yes Ja...x pop the tin in the oven about 15 monutes before the pudding goes in

Gee

Gee Report 18 Oct 2010 19:20

Fanny Craddock couldnt cook Yorkies!

jax Report 18 Oct 2010 19:22

I know that Gins...but your instructions said pop tin in before you had made the batter!!

I never measured anything out either when I made them

Well I am in big trouble now

Promised OH his favourite Toad in Hole - ( with onions and sage in his Yorkshire )

How I am going to learn how to make a mix - by tomorrow - when I have not been able to ------apart from a few flukes for the last 40 odd years

Looks like the soggy spongy thing I usually end up with

Who started the Yorkshire pudding chat ----

Hi

cloudy cool day today

Janey .............. I have the 1975 edition of the Joy of Cooking. Use it frequently, but have never tried the Yorkshire Pudding recipe.

The 2 cookbooks I've used for that are the Cheshire Women's Institute Cookery Book, 1965 edition, and the Cannon Cookery Book, 1949 edition.

The latter was left with the gas stove in the house we moved into in 1951 .... and I acquired for my very own when I left home!

I couldn't follow Mum's recipe ....... she had died by the time I wanted to cook YP's, and she measured by a handful of this or that!

Weights don't bother me .......... I learnt to cook at school in England, using measurements. I get more confused with cups!

Actually, you should see my bookshelves ........... one of my souvenirs from places we visited used to be a local cookbook. I have them from all over the world, some I can't even read the language!

I also have several similar to the Joy of Cooking, and also have the Larousse Gastronomique, etc

and I do practically no cooking now!
