'THE PRESS' , Christchurch , NZ , 15 July 1916 . A resident of the Dominion for over forty years, in the person of Mr Robert Pollock Smith, passed away at Duvauchelle's Bay on Sunday at the ripe ago of 83. Mr Smith was a native of Airdrie, Scotland, and as a young man he entered the service of the Commissariat Department of the Indian Government, and remained in it for a number of years. After visiting Scotland Mr Smith came out to New Zealand, arriving about 1875 in the ship Mermaid. He tried his luck, like many others, on thoegoldfields, but not meeting with success, he settled down to farming pursuits in the Waimate district. He took a keen interest in politics, working consistently for .tho late Sir William Steward. During the past twelve years Mr Smith had lived in retirement, latterly with his sonin-law. Mr S. J. Vogan. of Duvauchelle's Bay. Mr Smith leaves a grown-up family, one son being Private T. Pollock Smith, who is with the Australian forces somewhere in France.

Elaine, if you think that the 1881 census is the correct parents for your Janet then it may be worth checking for their deaths on Scotlandspeople. Scottish death registrations give the names of the parents including the mother's maiden surname if the informant knew the details.
????
1885 WARDS ELLEN F 80 KIRKWALL AND ST OLA /ORKNEY 021/00 0015
1888 WARDS THOMAS M 80 KIRKWALL AND ST OLA /ORKNEY 021/00 0045
Used my last 5 credits to look at Thomas's death.
Thomas Wards, Pauper and Widower died at 3h. 30m. PM on 2nd. August 1888 at Orkney Combination Poorhouse. His father Thomas Wards, farmer and his mother Janet Wards maiden surname Goar were both deceased. The cause of death was General Paralysis 5 days. The informant was the Govenor of the Poorhouse.

In Scotland, Jessie is used synonymously for Janet. Both Jessie and Janet have a number of variant spellings. http://www.whatsinaname.net/

The 1841 census for Orkney is completely transcribed at FreeCEN (but nothing later yet). http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl NB In 1841 only, adult (15+) ages were supposed to be rounded down to a mult of 5. Here's Lindsay's family:
Piece: SCT1841/26 Place: Sanday -Orkney Enumeration District: 1 Civil Parish: Cross Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: - Folio: 1 Page: 11 Address: Backaskaill -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks WARDS Thomas M 30 Agricultural Labourer Orkney WARDS Hellen F 35 Orkney WARDS Elizabeth F 6 Orkney WARDS Thomas M 4 Orkney WARDS James M 1 Orkney
Sanday is one of the larger islands in Orkney. I think it forms one civil parish. It is shaped like the letter y. Each leg formed an ecclesiastical parish. The NE peninsula forms Lady Psh, the SW peninsula forms Cross Psh, and the N peninsula forms Burness Psh. The latter 2 parishes were united. Backaskaill was a small commumity on the S coast of Cross Psh. Go to http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ and look up 364200,1039400 and zoom out a step to see it.

Marriages? 1908/7596 Ellen Pollock Smith m. Samuel James VOGAN 1915/3934 Jane Pollock Smith m. Daniel Gideon Bimbler
Ellen did marry Sam Vogan and lived in Duvauchelle, Akaroa, NZ until she died suddenly while going to take a bath.. My parents used to visit Jessie Vogan /Hayward regularly. She was Ellen's daughter. I have a picture of Sam and Ellen's wedding where Annabella was the bridesmaid. I also have the marriage record.
Jane married Dan Bimbler and lived in Featherstone. When she died Aunt Annabella Pollock Smith went to Featherstone to look after the children. She was one very strick lady. Walked like she had a brrom handle up her back and had a habit of pulling my shoulders back as I sat at the table!

Try http://www.cursiter.com/pages/indices.htm, a great site for all things Orkney related to genealogy. Also suggests she was WARDS, rather than WARD.
:-) Good luck!

??? Thomas and Ellen in 1871
1871 Census
Name: Thomas Wards Age: 62 Estimated birth year: abt 1809 Relationship: Head Spouse's name : Hellen Gender: Male Where born: Sanday, Orkney Registration Number: 21 Registration district: Kirkwall and St Ola Civil parish: Kirkwall and St Ola County: Orkney Address: Lower Scaper Occupation: Fisherman
Thomas Wards 62 Hellen Wards 64 Thomas Wards 34
and in 1881
1881 Census
Name: Thomas Wards Age: 72 Estimated birth year: abt 1809 Relationship: Head Spouse's name : Ellen Gender: Male Where born: Sanday, Orkney Registration Number: 21 Registration district: Kirkwall and St Ola Civil parish: Kirkwall and St Ola County: Orkney Address: Nether Scapa Occupation: Fisherman
Thomas Wards 72 Ellen Wards 74 Thomas Wards 44
Incidentally ................... if you look at the ages/birth years of Thomas Ward(s) on all these censuses you can see that the submitted record regarding his marriage year is wrong
He would only have been about 12 if he got married in 1820!!
That's assuming of course that we all have the correct Thomas!

Unfortunately this record of her parents marriage from the International Genealogical Index on www.familysearch.org (the Mormon or LDS site) is a SUBMITTED record
Such records have been sent by individuals, usually members of the LDS church, and have no backing documentation so one never knwos whether the information is accurate, bent to fit the facts or made up! In other words, they are not to be trusted!

Janet WARD of Sanday, Orkney was my great grandmother. I cannot find anything about her except that she married my great grandfather Robert Pollock Smith, a Scotsman. Her death certificate says she was born in Sanday Orkney Islands. Death date was 15/2/1913 and says she was 73 yrs. It also says she was married in Christchurch, New Zealand (but Rpberts' death says it was Dunedin) Her parents were Thomas and Ellen Ward. He could have been a ploughman.
My mother used to tell me about her and her children. They were all born in NZ. I have to assume the marriage was in NZ because Robert Pollock Smith came to NZ on the Parsee in 1874 and he was 39 yrs and single.
Can anyone tell me about her please?
