Hi, my name is Dianne Edwards nee Sims and have been tracing my family tree. I have not managed to get to Taunton Records Office yet but have traced the Symes / Sims family back to 1750. I then came across various websites with the first known Symes of Somerset being John Symes ( 1510 ) of Barwick Somerset thro to Thomas Symes (1605) of Chard, Somerset, various children went off to America and Antigua. I am concentrating on tracing the branches that stayed in England and trying to link them back up to 1750. Anyone with any info please help!!!

Hi Dianne, I have a Louisa Symes from Baltonbough, Somerset born 1819c but she migrated to South Australia in 1840. Later married a Frederick Frith in Adelaide. Lousia's parents were possbibly Joseph Symes and Jane Marsh but this is not certain. Carolyn

Hi Dianne, My grandmother's sister Sarah Ann Nuttycombe married an Oliver Symes born 1868 in Edington, Somerset. His father was a James Symes born 1837 in Edington, Somerset his wife was Temperance (no maiden name as yet) she was born 1839 in Catcott, Somerset. James must have died as Temperance married a John Fox in 1873. Sarah and Oliver had six sons: Reginald, Robert, Oliver, Victor, John and Harold. I can find a marriage entry for Temperance and John Fox, but so far not for James Symes and Temperance.

My name is Sherron (Sherry) Sims Gerald. I live in America. I'm trying to determine the English origin of my ancestor, William Syms. William Syms came to Virginia in 1658, lived in James City County and New Kent County, and died in 1725. His sons moved a little inland into Hanover and Louisa County, Virginia. He has MANY descendants all over America, especially the South. The information from the internet is based on old research and says he came from Somerset, England, but so much internet information is wrong, I don't know if that is true. Some say he came from Gloucestershire and one book says Cornwall. He undoubtedly came from southwest England, because that is the origin of most colonial Virginians. There was a George Syms/Sims who came to America from Antiqua, who genealogists assumed was related to William, however, Y-DNA tests of the descendants of William and George show that they were NOT related. My brother was one of many male to male, etc. descendants of William, and they're all in the same haplogroup. George's descendants are in another haplogroup. Are you, or do you know of, any men in England named Syms/Sims/Symes who know their Syms ancestors have lived in SW England since the mid-17th century who have done a Y-DNA test? Or do you know any of the above described men who would take a Y-DNA test at my expense? Thank you! Sherry

Welcome to the boards Sherry
None of the Symes posters on this thread ever returned. Apart from AnnCardiff, who found records which may be relevant, you could click on their names to send them a message. If they still have the same email address, they'll be able to reply. You can then discuss your offer with them.
Use the Search all members trees (top right under Search) to contact members who list your earliest confirmed Symes name. Ask if they have a direct blood line and if they'd be happy to take the test.

Hi all,
I'm Gavin Sims, born in South Wales, and so far have traced the Sims/Symes back to about 1780 to my 4th GG Robert Sims (or Sim, or Symes depending on which Census you look at and he came from Somerset, Pitcombe is the 1841 census is correct :)) Anyway, this is where I get stuck. Apparently his father was a John Sims and his mother Elizabeth, also from Somerset/Gloucestershire.
I hoping to get a DNA test done in November when I get some cash, but would love to keep in contact with you. I've heard lots about the family moving to the US and settling in various states, but it's finding that link.

Welcome to the boards Gavin
As I said in my post of 7 Sep 2015, if you wanted to contact any of the Symes posters, try sending them a personal message by clicking on their name
Rather than tag onto this thread, if you wanted specific help, it would be best to start one of your own.
A few people have found DNA testing useful - it depends what you are hoping to get out of it.

OK, thank you, I'll do that. I'm just trying to link back on my tree prior to 1780 where I have my 4th GG Robert Sims. I'll message some members and see if they can help :) Thanks for the reply.
